ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL
What is Acrysof ReSTOR?
The AcrySof ReSTOR lens is a permanent artificial lens that is convex on both sides and made of a soft plastic. It is folded and inserted into the eye through a tiny incision smaller than the optic diameter of the lens. After insertion, the lens gently unfolds to ReSTOR vision. The supporting arms of the lens maintain proper positioning within the eye.
Am I a candidate for ReSTOR?
Anyone who has a normal eye exam and is dependent on reading glasses or bifocals may be a candidate. Although ReSTOR IOL lenses are initially approved for cataract patients with or without Presbyopia, it is not necessary to need cataract surgery to qualify for the ReSTOR IOL lens.
Is the ReSTOR lens more effective than other IOLs?
The ReSTOR lens is like two lenses in one. One refractive lens is for distance, and the other one, a diffractive lens, is for near. ReSTOR is not dependent on the movement of the lens but has a unique Apodized Diffractive optic that is new to IOL design. The optical design of the lens distributes light between near vision and distant vision to accommodate vision at a range of distances.
How is this procedure performed?
This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes a few hours. To avoid any discomfort, the eye is treated with anesthetic prior to the procedure. A tiny incision is made in the eye, allowing the surgeon to use a small instrument about the size of a pen tip, to break up or wash away the cloudy cataract. Once the cataract is removed, the ReSTOR IOL is inserted and set into it's permanent position.
What can I expect after the procedure?
Following the procedure, you'll rest for a short time before going home. To guard against infection and help your eye heal, you will be given a prescription for eye drops. To prevent you from rubbing your eye, for a few days you may need to wear a protective shield especially at night. Although everyone heals differently, most patients see well enough to return to most of their routine activities the day following their surgery.
How many patients are 100% glasses free after having this procedure?
The results are very good. After ReSTOR IOL lenses are implanted, 80% of patients claim they never wear glasses. Nearly 94% said they would have the lens again. Some patients may need a little correction for computer work, but can usually work without glasses.
